The Stigmartus are a Chaos Cult and warband operating in the Jericho Reach region and were key combatants against the Imperium in the Achilus Crusade. Consisting of renegades, madmen, criminals, cultists, mutants, and rogue psykers, the Stigmartus are named for the ritual branding of their flesh with the sigil of their masters.
Although they are brutal and frenzied to the extreme, like the Blood Pact they maintain harsh discipline and military-style professionalism, being organized closely along the lines of an Imperial Guard Regiment. The commanders of the Cult are believed to be the remainder of the previous heretic rulers of Khazant, which fell early in the Achilus Crusade. Now they are bound by the charismatic leadership of a cult-general known as Elak Sarda, said to be sworn to a daemonic entity within the Charon Stars.
The Stigmartus cult is technically at least four cults, dedicated to all four Choas Gods. There is evidence of infighting within differently aligned factions of the cult.
Traitor Space Marines
In service of the Stigmartus are a significant number of Traitor Legion and Renegade Chapter Space Marine warbands which have allied themselves with the cult.
Over the millennia the energies that saturate the Eye of Terror have worked their transformative effects on both the living flesh and the inanimate weapons and armour of the Chaos Space Marines. As far as weapons and equipment, the Chaos Legions retain much of their Legiones Astartes heritage.
The bolter remains the main weapon even when it has been refigured into a fusion of biological and inorganic parts, or redesigned into strange and baroque forms by the whims of Chaos or the user himself. Although power armour is often unrecognisable as once being Astartes-issue, the suits continue to function the same, and include standard auto-sensory technology, communicators and respirators. Armour has been recoloured and redecorated to show allegiance to the Legion’s Chaos patron.
